New Review for Blood For Blood, A Tale of Zytarri, and an Excerpt

After attending a Valentine's Ball last night with my husband, which was very nice, I came home to a first review for my new release, Blood For Blood. I'm going to share  a snippet of it this morning. And I'm also wishing you all a very Happy Valentne's Day today. :-)

“...dark and dangerous atmosphere, with sex and blood serving as the binding agent. ... This isn’t your typical romance... Abriel doesn’t pull her punches in terms of story telling... Abriel has built a vast world, with many different characters that are well thought out and extremely complex.” -thebookpushers.com/2015/02/13/joint-review-blood-for-blood-zytarri-1-by-darcy-abriel/

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Safe to say it's a dark and twisted tale of revenge in which love and romance must find a way to triumph. Not for the faint of heart. Fairly said. And thus, having said that, here's the blurb, and an excerpt from Blood for Blood.

This is a story based on the premise that if vampires were descended from an alien culture, what would that species and civilization be like? Can a vampire-like creature, with essence of human built into it, be "tamed"? Should a vampire be tamed? Creatures of the wild, with inbred instincts to feed, to hunt, to strike out when threatened, to protect what is theirs, to prey upon those weaker than themselves. Is it possible for such a lethal creature such as this to organize, to control those instincts, to maintain relationships with other species? The Sangorrians - a society that has learned to do just that. But, have they truly, and for how long can the veneer of civilized restraint last?

Zytarri, Book 1

The Past…
Leora Saguna has become what her kind fear most—a blood huntress. Fueled by a lust for revenge for the assassination of her Alpha, she has violated every Sangorrian law to track the murderers down. And one day return to her infant daughter, Katriel.

Each time Noah Chisca watches his mark take macabre delight in her task, he is one dead bandit closer to earning the highest bounty of his career. Yet he can’t deny the desire that twists his gut. He takes her captive; she takes him as her mate.

The Present…
Katriel knows bonding with the mate her mother has chosen will ensure her future as heir. But the memory of the forbidden warrior monk who stole her heart haunts her, and she rebels.

Valyn’s identity is hidden until he’s proven himself worthy of Katriel. But fighting a deadly dragon is only the beginning of their nightmare, as sinister forces conspire to shake the foundations of Sangorrian society and unleash a reign of blood that may destroy them all

EXCERPT:

Leora set aside the papers she’d been reviewing. Her expression told him  nothing. Nor did Sec Noah’s.

“Good morning, Valyn. You slept well?”

“Yes, thank you, Mistress.”

“My Second Attendant, Noah, has informed me of your bravery on the day of your
arrival, as well as your encounter with the dragon, and recounted your concern for and assistance with the people at Mt. Triton. You have earned his respect, and that is no easy feat.” She smiled. “I must say, I’ve also been hearing some very interesting retellings of your battle with the Vawndra from the servants.”

He glanced quickly at Noah but was met with an emotionless mask. He returned his gaze to Mistress Leora. “The mercenaries weren’t difficult to defeat, Mistress. The guards from Leah certainly outmatched them, and there was little I was required to do. The garrison of Leah is well trained.”

“I understand you’re educated in Ebonnian history.” Her black gaze seemed to penetrate his soul. He remained steady beneath her appraisal and tried not to appear unsettled by her abrupt change of subject.

“Yes, Mistress.”

She sat back and steepled her hands, her elbows resting on the arms of her chair. She exuded beauty and power as she studied him. He knew her background and respected her for the difficult choices he knew she’d been required to make over the years as Mistress of Leah.

“So tell me, what do you know of the history of the Aurora Valley?”

“Where would you like me to begin, Mistress?” he asked as courteously as possible.

“What is your understanding of the governing body of the Valley?”

“The Aurora Valley is ruled through the Seven Houses of the Crimson Sun. It is a
matriarchal society handed down from mother to eldest daughter in each House.”

“Very good. Can you name the Seven Houses?”

“The Houses are Allegra, Briana, Cleantha, Corinne, Electra, Galatea, and Leah.”

Her posture seemed to ease somewhat when he didn’t hesitate in his responses. “Well done, Valyn. It is good to know you won’t require a tutor to instruct you on Ebonnian politics. Now, what about the bonding ritual and blood rite? How familiar are you with the requirements for an Alpha Predom?”

“I’ve made myself thoroughly familiar, Mistress. But I understand there are customs that aren’t generally shared in the history books, and I’m ready to do whatever is required.”

“Do you understand your mate will need your blood to survive? That you’re responsible for her well-being at all times? That you’ll be expected to be totally loyal in every way to your mate? As she will be to you?” She leaned forward, examining him intently. “Do you realize there are those who would attempt to bribe an Alpha to gain access to the secrets of the Aurora Valley? Some have been put to death for their disloyalty. And then—” Her voice faltered, and a flicker of pain crossed her face.

Noah leaned forward as though sensing her unease and placed a hand on her shoulder.

She reached up to touch him, seeming to gain strength from him.

“There are others,” she continued in a strong voice, “who would attempt to murder the Alpha to the Matriarch in an effort to destroy the leadership. You’ll need to be on your guard at all times. Are you prepared for that as well?”

“I understand completely. I’ve already made that commitment to the Lady Katriel. It may not yet be official, but my resolve is unwavering.”

Leora again studied him for a long time. Slowly, she rose and walked around the side of the desk. “Disrobe, please. I wish to confirm the replica wasn’t altered concerning your suitability and lack of abnormalities.”

He’d known this was coming. A part of him rebelled at being ordered to disrobe before her, but he raised his hands and unbuttoned the brown robe, allowing it to drop to the floor at his feet. He returned to the stance of respect and waited, focusing his attention on the window just past where Noah stood.

He felt her assessing gaze as it roved over him and refused to respond to it or let it shake him.

She slowly circuited him, apparently studying him from every angle. She stopped
to examine the long slashing wound on his arm, seemed to assess each bruise and cut, categorizing every nuance of his body.

Finally, she halted in front of him and nodded. “Your wounds are a reflection of your bravery. It is my opinion that you are well suited as a mate for my daughter. Your conduct and bravery have already shown you’ll be a good protector. You may….”

The door to her office burst open, interrupting her words.

“Mother, please…” a frantic feminine voice spoke from behind him, then stopped
abruptly.

Valyn, unashamed of his nakedness, swung around to see who was there and was shocked to find himself staring into the startled gaze of his soon-to-be mate. She was everything he remembered and more. Her long dark hair fell in dishevelment about her face, her breasts heaved with agitation, her pale pink lips rounded in apparent shock. But what surprised him most were the dilated, smoky depths of her eyes. Darkened with what could only be lust.

She had eyes for no one else in the room once she saw him standing there. He saw tears pool within their depths, the startled recognition. “What is your name?” she whispered hoarsely.

He faced her, and her mouth gaped wider. Her eyes dilated more intensely, and her hands clenched at her side.

“My name is Valyn, lady. I’ve come for you as I vowed I would.”

Haevyn - A first Glimpse, and something about names

I was going to share a bit about the E.L.L.C. - the elite logical life core, this week, but this morning I received the final cover for Haevyn.

Here it is, the cover for my upcoming novel, Haevyn, the second book in the Humanotica series, coming from Samhain Publishing. I've just been given permission to share it. Due to be released in March 2012.

My thanks to Kanaxa, who has done an absolutely fabulous job in capturing the essence of Haevyn with her imagery for this cover.

What's this story about?

Duty and honor demand the ultimate sacrifice.

Everyone has their poison. For Haevyn Breina, it’s her inability to resist a dare. This time it’s a challenge from her friend and lover, Grisha, to sneak into the popular, illegal cage fights that always end in all-male orgies. Eagerly she snaps up the gauntlet, unaware that she will end the night forever changed.

When expatriate humanotic warrior Entreus locks eyes with Haevyn at the sex-fueled event, he is instantly captivated. Despite a duty that binds him to an exiled malevolent sorcerer, he seeks her out in a shattering, illuminating encounter.

Grisha’s plan is in motion—to bring both his warrior lovers together and heal their scarred souls with a combined passion that he alone cannot provide. But Haevyn’s tormented past refuses to die. And Entreus will not rest until the Core that ruined his life is destroyed.

Amid ever-tangling emotions and a brutal plot to take over the city, the three lovers walk a tightrope that could be cut at any moment. Fighting for justice, bound by duty…and a love that could alter the foundations of their world.

Warning: Watch out for oiled-up, naked trinespined warriors battling for top position, feisty tracer females that fit oh-so-snugly in between, and sexy nights that segue into complex relationships. Beware of tebitcheckers wielding those nasty little contulators at illegal, testosterone-drenched cage confrontations.

Something to think about. In naming my characters I often look to name meanings or what I want the name to say about a person. With Entreus, I wanted sort of a gladiatorial sort of name and came up with his name. For Haevyn, it's sort of a play on what she's unconsciously seeking. And with Grisha - well, Grisha is a Russian from of Gregory. And if one looks up the meaning of Gregory, it means "vigilant watchman." I think in many ways this name is appropriate for him.

And those illegal cage confrontations are officially, or unofficially called...Cockrage Events. Man games.

Creating the City of Quentopolis

The mind really does have a way of working in mysterious ways and I have to admit mine works pretty strangely at times. In creating Quentopolis, the city-state at the heart of my Humanotica series, and which sits at rather a rift of time and space, likened perhaps to a worm hole, known as the "Dimensional Borders," I started playing around with some photos I had taken of machinery parts.

Some people do their world building rather more logically perhaps, but I don't think I'm often accused of being logical. And I can't draw for beans. But I do love photography.

The first image I played around with was a close-up of railroad ties. I came up with this first image you see here. What drew my eye first was that little dot in the middle and I tagged it as being the Central Business District of Quentopolis, with the rest of the city spreading out from that nucleus. This is also where the financial district--the Tebit Square Exchangeable would be located. And it is the political seat of the Concilium-Politico Offices.

There is a darkness to this city. This first image looks rather like it came from a science fiction piece doesn't it? Maybe sort of like a timepiece that one wears on the wrist if you look at it just right. The image was founded from what I think of as a steam or steampunk-based image. That's sort of what this series tends to be--scifantasy--erotic scifantasy.

I played some more, with another image this time. I think this one came from a wheel of an old steam engine, but I can't remember. In this image I started to see the main quadrants of Quentopolis. There is the central quadrant at the center of the intersecting four other districts of the city. Then we have the Waterfront District, or Moondown Water District to the right or east, which includes the factory and workhouses, the wharves, where the working class reside. To the opposite side of the central business district, on the left or west, is the Elite District, a total opposite to the Moondown District, as noted by its name, and above the Central district to the north is the Midlands District, a relatively uninhabited, mountainous region. To the northeast of the Midlands District is where the Dimensional Borders and the transit stations are located. Extasia, an isolated district, is where the official home of the Dominatae nobility is located. That would be on the other side of a range of mountains at the northern borders of the Midlands District.

Creating this world isn't a simple process, and does have a way of continuing to morph and change as I discover more about the city and its inhabitants, and it's architecture. But this is how it started as I tried to visualize the layout of the city and who might live there.

I moved from this to actually creating a rough map with a software program, and if you're curious, you can find it at the Humanotica website.

Silver, the first book in the Humanotica series, is available at Samhain Publishing, or any other retailer of fine books. Haevyn, the second book in the series is schedule for release in early 2012.

And currently I now need to return to working on the third book in the series, tentatively titled, "Kestra." The outline is underway and I'm excited to find out what new surprises and adventures the characters have in store.

More on Perceived Ebook Price Fixing

Today The Guardian (via Publisher's Weekly) posted an article on Apple's struggle to Defeat Amazon. More on the big, bad Amazon and efforts to justify an agency model of price threshold to perhaps guarantee the survival of other heretofore giants in the publishing industry.

There seems to be nasty growing pains at the upper echelons of the publishing world. I sense much desperation to hold a place that tended to squeeze the availability of the printed word as in narrowing the choices available, attempting to define what sells, and creating boundaries that tended to squeeze out creative, more niche, talents, and went for the sure sales. I understand the need to stall monopoly. I understand the need that in order to survive, a company, even large corporations, need to show a profit and they don't want their books becoming loss leaders for a company such as Amazon, who has broadened its merchandise scope. Really, I do understand this.

But, the costs, long-ranging, in production of ebooks versus long-ranging in production of a mass market paperback, trade paperback, hard cover, is not the same. Once that ebook is produced, one does not have to revert to more print runs, one is not subject to returns, one is not subject to landfill for books that do not sell as well as anticipated.

The argument that Amazon's market share has been reduced as a direct result of this sort of agency model is...well, suspect. Let's see, the market is flooded with all brands and models of tablets, such as Kobo, B&N, Google, Asus, HP, etc., etc. It seems to me that new consumer/readers will be purchasing as a first choice using a company that provides the app that makes it easiest to purchase what they want. In many cases, that will include discounts and gift certificates for new owners of these devices. My daughter just purchased two Nook tablets for her household, where do you think she's going to buy her books? I can't seem to find a Nook app for my Android tablet, I had a seamless download of the Kindle app. If someone has a Sony reader, or a Kobo reader, where do you thing they're going to purchase? Oh yeah, then there's the iPad. Mustn't forget that one.

I tend to be a bit savvy about techie stuff, so I'll probably be purchasing from a large range of sources, often small publishers because I know the author makes more when I do that.

I doubt I'd put the fluctuation in market share down to the agency models. That justification doesn't hold water. To me, what I see is that the consumer is caught in the cross-hairs of this battle. They are the ones who will suffer and pay the price. Right along with the authors aligned with the major publishers, especially mid-list and new talent. High prices for books mean less purchases made by the average consumer. And again, I see this particularly when you're talking about an ebook, where there is likely not the same reprint and stocking issues associated with those sales. Who's really being affected here? What is really impacting the market fluctuation? Or is it just an "I've got more clout than you and I don't care who suffers, as long as you get your wings clipped"?

I read a lot, and as I've mentioned before, it's across mediums. I have one research book on my Kindle DX, I have one short story up on my Android tablet, and I have a hard cover from one of my favorite authors. Yup, I'm into reading a bit each day from all three.

But for readers out there who want a good read, perhaps you might check with my publishers, they're always giving good deals on books. Take a minute to check out Amber Quill Press and Samhain Publishing if you want good prices for ebooks, and great stories to read, and formats that will work well on pretty much any readers, with customer service departments that are on the ball, ready to help. I'll also recommend Loose Id. Some wicked great reads from these publishers.

And now I've got to get back to writing.
